Legionnaires, American Legion Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion
All three organizations place high importance on preserving our American traditions and values, improving the quality of life for our nation's children, caring for veterans and their families, and perhaps most importantly, teaching the fundamentals of good citizenship. Our Family boasts a combined total membership of nearly 4.2 million members worldwide and we are still growing.
Membership to this exclusive family has its requirements.
To join, The American Legion you must have served honorably during, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, and the Persian Gulf War, having received an Honorable Discharge from such service, or be in the U.S. Military on active duty anywhere in the world.
To join, The Sons of The American Legion you must be a male descendant, adopted son or stepson of a member of The American Legion or a male descendant of a veteran who died in service during World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, and the Persian Gulf War, or who died subsequent to their Honorable Discharge from such service.
To Join, The American Legion Auxiliary you must be the mother, wife, daughter, sister, grand-daughter, great-grand-daughter, or grandmother of members of The American Legion, or deceased veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces during the listed war eras. Step relatives are also eligible. A woman veteran who is eligible for membership in The American Legion is also eligible to join the American Legion Auxiliary.
To Join, The American Legion Riders you must be a member in good standing of one of the three legion organizations. The ALR is a program of the American Legion.
Membership Eligibility Dates:
- World War I - April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918
- World War II - December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946
- Korean War - June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955
- Vietnam War - February 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975
- Grenada and Lebanon - August 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984
- Panama - December 20, 1989 to January 31, 1990
- Persian Gulf - August 2, 1990 closing date to be determined
